My parents made me believe in myself. I remember telling my parents that I hated being Ethiopian. The more I submerged myself into this American culture, the more I rejected my Ethiopian culture at home. My decision to reject my culture was influenced by my presence in an all white middle school, which changed as I entered a more diverse high school.
It is a big negative circle that spins onwards and perpetuates racism in schools. I was born in America shortly after my parents moved from Ethiopia.
I was the only one that was different. I screamed and fell out of my chair. People that do not get an education tend to live their lives in ignorance and on welfare. I was the only one in the room that needed that crayon.
It was kinda funny. If black people were not so insulted by being called white, then they study more and get better jobs to help cast off the stereotypical view that black people are lazy scroungers. This is yet another cycle of racism that perpetuates itself.
I realize now that although my experience in middle school strengthened the line I drew between my conflicting cultures, my transition into high school transformed my concept of identity.
But as I transitioned to a more diverse high school, I realized how important it was to integrate with my Ethiopian heritage. And for the most part, it worked. We cried for hours with happiness. The people that racists target are making their victims racist against the race of the attacker.
Even if African people were racist against white people, they see that being called white is not as bad as the consequences of not having an education. On the other hand, a person that has just come from Africa, and is black, will happily spend all day in a library and school in order to get a good education.
They always said I should go to one of those schools, but I brushed it aside, thinking I would never get in. It is my opinion that there is a culture within the school and community that makes racism both inevitable and ongoing.
